Makeup Tips for Mature Skin

Do you want to apply makeup but are afraid of accentuating the changes you've noticed in your skin? Know that there are some valuable makeup tips for mature skin that can help you.
Applying too many or too few products, the colors you use, the way you apply, the textures used... The entire makeup process for mature skin has its secrets.
With simple tricks, it's possible to enhance the natural beauty of your skin and create well-done and elegant makeup!
Before the makeup
Obviously, you already know that before starting makeup, it's important that you've completed your skincare routine and that your skin should be well hydrated.
The skin tends to lose water and other substances, becoming drier and rougher. Therefore, choose a moisturizer with a light formula and hyaluronic acid, which helps retain moisture and smooth wrinkles and fine lines.
Protecting the skin with sunscreen is also essential since foundation and makeup products have other functions. Sunscreens with drier coverage are the most recommended. Wait a few minutes until the skin fully absorbs the product.
Now we can begin!
Primer or Bluer
The primer or bluer is a preparatory product for makeup. It serves to disguise pores and even out skin texture.
In addition to increasing the durability of your makeup, you'll notice that the application of products will be easier, with a sensation of glide and fluidity.
*Golden tip (that I learned from @simonesaoficial): after the primer, apply a small drop of your preferred oil (coconut or rosehip) to the area under the eyes. This technique helps to minimize wrinkles or bags in this area.
Foundation
The makeup tip for mature skin at this stage is to opt for the most fluid foundation possible, with light coverage and the appropriate color for your face, neck, and chest.
Avoid high-coverage foundations, matte effect ones, and those with larger shimmer particles (like glitter) because they will accentuate expression lines.
* Golden tip: foundations with a slight shimmer in their composition, with a pearlescent effect, can provide a well-cared-for skin appearance!
Concealer
It's suitable for the concealer to also have a light and creamy texture, be easy to spread, and blend well on the skin.
Apply a small amount of product below the inner corner of the eyes, below the outer corner of the eyes, at the center of the nose bridge, at the lower center of the forehead (near the glabella), and on the temples to add more brightness to the face.
Using a dampened sponge or your fingertips, distribute the concealer with gentle tapping to avoid accumulation in fine lines. Avoid dragging the product so it doesn't move.
*Golden tip: when spreading under the eyes, continue tapping towards the temples, forming an upward diagonal. This effect ensures a more lifted look and greater clarity to the appearance.
Contour
Using contour is a technique that can help define facial features and add depth to makeup, but it should be used moderately, according to your personal preferences and natural characteristics.
Prefer products with a creamy texture, with a warm brown or burnt pink base, which is more natural for mature skin.
Apply the contour with a large, fluffy brush to spread the product and blend well, avoiding harsh lines. The goal is to create a soft shadow effect in the desired areas, such as the sides of the nose, below the jawline, to disguise the "double chin," and on the forehead near the hairline.
Blush
To use blush in your makeup, prefer softer shades and apply cautiously. Peach, light pink, and bronze blushes are the best color palettes to use.
Here, too, it's recommended to use creamy products and avoid areas you want to disguise. Blending the blush well into the skin ensures a more subtle finish.
When applying to the apples of the cheeks, perform the same effect as with the concealer, lifting the blush gently and upwards towards the temples.
Face powder
This is the moment when mature people should be more careful when doing makeup. Compact or larger particle powders tend to emphasize expression lines.
Excessive use of powder is often used in theatrical makeup, for example, as an aging technique, as reported by Laura Kuczynski, a digital content creator, actress, communicator, and beauty expert.
However, the use of powder is necessary to prevent your makeup from looking melted. It serves to set the foundation and minimize the oily appearance of the skin.
But then, how should I use it?
Ideally, use a very fine, loose, and translucent face powder in the T-zone (center of the forehead, nose, and chin) to ward off shine. Avoid the area below the eyes.
Eyebrows
Touch up your eyebrows only to disguise possible gaps or to remove marks from previously used products. Use an eyeshadow or pencil with the closest possible color to the natural color of your eyebrows.
Avoid a heavy finish and overly thin or excessively arched eyebrow shapes. A good technique is to comb the eyebrows upwards and then fill in the gaps with small, gentle strokes.
*Golden tip: you can use a gel or eyebrow mascara to fix and keep the hairs in place, giving a more organized and defined appearance. Also, make the eyebrow filling less prominent near the glabella. Start by applying the product from the center to the ends!
Eyes
Makeup tips for mature skin in the eye area can make all the difference in the final result.
At this stage, prefer neutral and matte shades that help create a softer and more natural effect. Invest in blending techniques to ensure a better transition between colors.
You don't need to perform all the following steps. Test to see how you best adapt to the tips, but don't do them during your event. Use your free time, take photos to compare and choose which one you liked the most, and create your unique self-makeup style.
*Golden tip: if you're not experienced, use a piece of adhesive tape (crepe or micropore) between the outer corner of the eye and the outer tip of the eyebrow to delimit the end of the eyelid coloring.
1. Background Eyeshadow – Fixed Eyelid
To lift the gaze and give a depth effect, apply a dark shade like brown on the outer corner of the eyelid and blend towards the eye crease and center.
If you have a droopy or "chubby" fixed eyelid, raise this movement above the crease, almost towards the eyebrows, doing the same movement.
Grasping the brush at the end, with a light hand, helps to glide the eyeshadow more easily and achieve a soft blend. Don't forget that it's all about practice!
If you want a more striking makeup look, repeat the process; otherwise, for lighter makeup, apply only once with less product.
2. Center Eyeshadow / Mobile Eyelid
In the middle of the mobile eyelid, try applying lighter shades than the previous color; for example, a burnt rose can be a great option.
You can even use an eyeshadow with a little shimmer, but there's a chance it could accentuate eyelid sagging, so apply carefully.
In the inner corner of the eye, add an even lighter shade with just a small dot.
Go back with the blending brush between the colors to make the transition between them appear natural.
3. Defined Eyes
To create a more defined look, you can use a black or stronger brown eyeshadow applied with an angled brush.
Apply the product to the outer corner of the eye, as if you were creating eyeliner, bringing the brush toward the center and close to the inner corner, along the lash line. Return to the outer corner and lightly blend the chosen color, without raising it too high.
This technique can also be used with a creamy eyeliner pencil, but avoid creating a very distinct line, as it may highlight wrinkles. Eyeliner is not recommended for mature skin, as it creates a harsh line in the makeup.
Remember the upward diagonal suggested for the concealer? If you didn't use adhesive tape, you can use the sponge again as an eraser to clean up any excess colors applied to the end of the eyelid.
*Golden tips: use the same brush with brown eyeshadow or pencil below the waterline close to the lower lashes, also leaving it lightly blended. You will notice an eye-opening effect.
4. Mascara
An important trick for mascara application is to use one that provides volume and length without creating clumps or clusters that make the eyes look heavy.
One tip is to choose a mascara with a lighter formula and quick-drying properties to prevent product buildup and facilitate application. Another option is to use a brush with more widely spaced bristles, so the product is distributed evenly and without excess.
Also, avoid using an eyelash curler, as it can damage the lashes and make them more fragile; instead, use a mascara that naturally provides volume and curvature to the lashes.
*Golden tip: if you smudge the mascara even after all your effort applying the eyeshadows, don't worry. Let it dry completely and then remove it with a dry cotton swab or a slightly stiffer brush, and it will come off easily.
Lipstick
To finish your makeup, use a lipstick with softer, moisturizing shades that help prevent the lips from appearing dry or wrinkled. Colors like soft pinks, nude, and peach are good options.
Another tip is to invest in a lip liner/pencil to help keep the lipstick in place and prevent it from bleeding into expression lines. You can create an outline right at the edge, almost outside your lips, to increase volume, as this area loses fat over time.
Lastly, applying a bit of gloss to the center of the lips to create the illusion of volume and fill in fine lines is another valuable tip. But be careful not to overdo it, as too much shine can further accentuate expression lines around the lips.
Don't forget!
- Allow your skin to fully absorb the products (wait for them to "dry"),
- Always take care of your mature skin,
- Choose products with creamy, light, and hydrating textures,
- Prefer neutral shades (browns, beige, gray, and burnt pink are great options),
- Practice your makeup to achieve natural effects,
- Highlight strategic points on your face,
- Avoid products with glitter particles,
- Be mindful of excesses.
At the end of the process, you can also apply a mist for a more eye-catching effect and to set your makeup.
With these makeup tips for mature skin, you can create a sophisticated look, enhance your natural beauty, and establish a sense of self-esteem with your skin's characteristics, making you feel more confident and beautiful!
